New SL Airport: Frank "Jack" Fletcher Field

I discovered a new airport quite by accident while I was looking for land to buy. My friend Cornelius Fanshaw directed me to a parcel up for sale, and when I scouted around to see what would be near me.... boom there it was... an airport!

I saw the name Frank "Jack" Fletcher Field on one of the main hangars. I had no idea who this was, so of course - I had to Google the guy.

RADM Frank "Jack" Fletcher Field (SLFF) is located at Hyojong, in Jeogeot. The airport is a General Aviation/Regional passenger facility at the south end of Jeogeot Gulf. Jeogeot Gulf is a large rez enabled combat area specifically for WW2 and modern naval and aviation battles.

I ran into many old friends from the old Aeronautic sims.

Old friend Karl Reisman is one of the airport managers.

I spotted a problem with the airport -- No Starbucks!

Jeogeot Gulf in the Jeogeot continent is a mostly rez enabled set of Linden water sims set up for naval combat. I'm sure most of the WW2 and modern groups are using VICE, but there's no official combat system - pirates and sailing ships are welcome.

Changes within the Royal Caledon Air Force (RCAF)

Effective at noon SL time on Thursday July 1st, Dan Gervasi will take the lead role in RCAF as Air Marshal, DaveDorm Gaffer will serve as Air Vice Marshal, and I will go into "semi-retirement" (which means more time travel adventures for me).

All other officer ranks remain unchanged and intact.

Land-Rights to Connolly-Messmer Aerodrome will be on sale March 15th - Royal Caledon Air Force (RCAF)

This is a very sad day for me....

Land-Rights to Connolly-Messmer Aerodrome will be on sale March 15th - Royal Caledon Air Force (RCAF)

With a heavy heart, the Land-Rights to RCAF Connolly-Messmer Aerodrome in Caledon Penzance will be on sale Monday March 15th, 2010.

I appreciate all the donations I've received over the past several months, however, as my family's economic situation has not improved over the last year, plus I near the time to leave economically depressed Michigan for greener pastures, and as donations have fallen over time, funding for the aerodrome is unsustainable for me.

Therefore, it's time to sell.

I'll begin entertaining offers first from members of the Royal Caledon Air Force on Monday 15 March 2010. If no offers are heard from the group, I'll make it available to citizens of Caledon and known members of the aviation community who are respectful of Caledon and the RCAF.

Rest assured, RCAF will continue to exist.

Skyboarding back...

I'm happy to report I'm not leaving SL or SL Social Media.

Mind you... I'm not going crazy with it either.

But I feel great after meeting some like-minded aviation friends at the aerodrome today, and by-golly it just might all work out for the best!

I'll see you around the Grid and the SL Social Media Bubble.

Gusty Winds

For now, this pilot is grounded....

In the past few weeks I've encountered unusually strong and distracting sim-cross effects that make flying and navigation impossible. The effect lasts anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds.

I wondered if other SL Pilots have had this experience as well. Please let me know in the comments

RCAF Command Promotion - Vickster Kuhn

I'm pleased and honored to annouce the promotion of ace pilot Vickster Kuhn to the rank of Air Vice Marshal (AVM) of the Royal Caledon Air Force. AVM Kuhn has demonstrated not only great piloting skills, but command skills in several aviation/combat related SL Groups. Our new AVM will be responsible for RCAF events - including dogfights - following our summer hiatus. Please join me in congratulating her on her new promotion.

Because I Fly (by Grover C. Norwood)

Because I fly

I laugh more than other men
I look up an see more than they,
I know how the clouds feel,
What it's like to have the blue in my lap,
to look down on birds,
to feel freedom in a thing called the stick...

who but I can slice between God's billowed legs,
and feel then laugh and crash with His step
Who else has seen the unclimbed peaks?
The rainbow's secret?
The real reason birds sing?
Because I Fly,
I envy no man on earth.

Tinkeratrix :: Ilsa Munro

One of my favourite people in Second Life now has a blog....

May I introduce my Tinkeratrix friend Ilsa Munro. She's a duchess, she builds, and does so with style, humour, and in spite of what she'll tell you, great aplomb as well.

From Ilsa's first blog post....

"I've been repeatedly informed that having a blog is a necessary step on the whole "getting the word out there" part of running a SL (tm) business so here I am catching the tail end of this particular trend. My problem is that I'm truly awful at self-promotion. It took forever for me to work up the nerve to post in the various forums in which I occasionally participate.

Two things have prompted me into action - or a reduced level of inaction. First, a friend basically told me to "shut up and do something about it" and since this is free it's the obvious choice :)

Second I can comfort my sense of modesty with the almost certain knowledge that almost no one will read this and as such it hardly makes a difference how self-aggrandizing it seems to me as I write it.

That of course leaves me with the question of exactly what to write.

A few of you might know that I build aircraft, so naturally I've decided that I'll - ahem - blog about fashion.

What's that you say? SL Fashion is already covered at great and extensive length by everyone and thier cross eyed cat?

Oh... Well then aircraft it is I suppose."

Airspeed: Battle Creek Behind the Scenes - Airshow Director Barb Haluszka

One of the big summer events in Western Michigan is the Air Show in Battle Creek. Steve Tupper from Airspeed chatted with Barb Haluszka the executive director of the Battle Creek Field of Flight Airshow and Balloon Festival on his most recent podcast....

WW2 Sims in Danger.... - Royal Caledon Air Force (RCAF)

WW2 Sims in Danger.... - Royal Caledon Air Force (RCAF)

Yesterday, I learned from an Admin at WW2 Sanctuary that 2 of the 3 sims (Bastogne and Fallout) are up for sale by Saffron Giano. The Seller and Admins are looking for a Buyer willing to preserve the status quo of the sims.

If you would be interested in such an undertaking, please contact Saffron Giano. The cost is approx. 300 USD per month for each sim.

Sadly, without a buyer, the 2 sims will be gone after June 30th. So if you enjoy those sims, play there while you can.

We need a "RCAF Wants You!" poster

Guv'nah Desmond Shang is looking for a 19th Century themed Royal Caledon Air Force poster for Caledon Oxbridge. Your work could be one of the first things a new Second Life resident sees in Caledon ;)

If anyone would like to volunteer on this project, please contact Phineas Messmer or Zoe Connolly.

The Heliograph: Deviant Art: Skyships II

From Rafael Fabre...

The Heliograph: Deviant Art: Skyships II

"Flyby" by Avatar Z Brown, coloured by Amarynceus

"....One of the favorite entires, statistically speaking, tend to be those with large amounts of graphics, and especially those with airships and Steampunk technology. Be it for inspiration or admiration, returning to the purest form the genre (and turning away from other unsavory political issues in the SL Steampunk world), I am displaying some of the more recent entries in Deviant art, a hotbed for new and emerging artists.

I have listed the title of their work and their "nom de plume" below each picture, so if you desire to see more of any individual's work, simply turn to Deviant art, and search on the artist in question, at: http://www.deviantart.com/...."

Aether Chronicles: Airship Tours Begin in Caledon

From Aether Inglewood....

Aether Chronicles: Airship Tours Begin in Caledon

"....A new addition has been added to the Connolly Aerodrome in Caledon Penzance. Hovering above the airfield is a new blimp very similar to the one that has been there since my coming to Caledon. The difference? This new airship owned by Virrginia Tombola now provides air service from Connolly Aerodrome to Lionsgate Tower and back...."
