When Games Trigger Empathy

When we combat role-play in games and virtual worlds, we often forget the real-world real-life consequences of death and damage in war. Much of game RP is all about racking up a kill-score. This is why I'd love to start a WW2 RP region that was mission oriented and not kill oriented.

In RL, war-fighting is all about accomplishing a mission and winning the war for your side as quickly as possible. But even when your objective is saving your home country and pushing back a terrible enemy, as in IL-2 Cliffs of Dover, empathy can creep into your mind.

Even though your cause may be righteous, there may also be sadness and loss.

With that in mind, this is a very thoughtful YouTube video from a regular player of IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover...

From the description:

This moment will stay with me for some time.

As I saw this helpless, straggling bomber spiral down towards earth, its fate doomed, I was struck by the horror I was watching. I could not stop thinking about those real men who would have been trapped inside, never to see their loved ones again.

Even in a flight sim, the resemblance to reality can make me quite emotional: the joy to successfully avenge the destruction the bomber brought upon innocent people, mixed with the agonizing thought of those ordinary men no different to me, being trapped alive in a burning cage, plunging down towards their inevitable death.

Caused by my actions.

DOR photos from May 2014

Here are 2 Dogs On The Run photos from May 13, 2014. Of course, these were taken before I started using SLGo, so the photo quality is not as good as the more recent sets since the end of December.

I totally forgot about these!

I have a file called "SL Projects" and on a whim, was sorting and resorting photos and folders this morning.

As I remember, I popped over to DOR to check out some vendors and look around. There was a DOR Angels group practice and we all chatted for a while until RL dragged me back.

RAF Tarington, RCAF HQ (WW2), an overview

Here is an overview of Cornelius Fanshaw's RAF Tarington Air Base located along the western edge of Jeogeot Gulf.

These two snapshots were taken right after the move to Tarington from next door Rundledawn. Niki Wilder now owns the parcel at Rundledawn.

(Toscha Vayander, me, Barry Foehammer, and Niki Wilder)

(The Bomber sits in the middle of the new Tarington parcel)

Cornelius has been very busy (but of course he loves it!) putting RAF Tarington all together with bits and pieces I've seen since I've known him. Now he has enough space and prim for everything. And all in a great location (Jeogeot Gulf) where such things are appreciated. Traffic has skyrocketed!

(I love the line of trees, it divides the parcels without preventing cross traffic between Cornelius and Niki. Nice touch, Niki!)

This is now base of operations for our 401 Squadron RCAF (WW2) SL Group.

So this was the overview. In my next post about RAF Tarington, I'll show you some details, and (whispering)... reveal a few secrets.

Subs!...or...50 Shades of Gray Lady Down

I love subs! The underwater vessel kind... Not the BDSM kind. 50 Shades of Gray Lady Down?

I had some problems diving. For some reason the PageUp and PageDown Keys were not working for me, so these snapshots are just showing my first surface voyage. There WILL be more adventures on the way.

It's very difficult to find a military submarine that isn't a WW2 German U-Boat or Japanese sub. If anyone knows (or can build) an American or British submarine, please let me know.

More Activity in SL, and another Blog Milestone

As previously posted here, a better experience in SL means more activity and more blog posts. Yay!

As of this writing, I stand at 75 blog posts, surpassing my 2010 total of 68 posts by a comfortable margin.

The next milestone will be 108 blog posts for 2015. This would beat the total number for 2010 through 2014 combined.

Thanks SLGo!
